History of the CAA

In 1957, several Colorado auctioneers decided that a professional auctioneers association should be formed. Assistance in establishing the Colorado Auctioneers Association (CAA) was provided by Bernie Hart (from the National Auctioneers Association), and Ernie Sherlock of St. Francis, Kansas (an officer of the National Auctioneers Association).

In 1958, the Colorado Auctioneers Association was created. The first President was Harvey Baldwin (Denver, Colorado), and the first Secretary was Bob Amen (Fort Collins, Colorado).

In 1959, the Colorado Auctioneers Association hosted the convention of the National Auctioneers Association in Denver, Colorado.

The CAA had a relatively small membership during its first 20- 25 years. A general membership meeting was held once a year. That meeting generally consisted of a noon meal, an afternoon program, and election of officers.

1980 was the first year the Colorado State Bid Calling Contest was held. The first Colorado State Bid Calling Champion was Booth Brown of Greeley, Colorado.

By 1983 membership in the CAA had grown considerably. A two day state convention and membership meeting featuring speakers and educational workshops was held.

In 1983, the Colorado Auctioneers Association hosted another convention of the National Auctioneers Association in Denver, Colorado.

In 1984, Si Lockhart from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was inducted as the first Hall of Fame recipient.

In 1987, a mid-summer picnic/meeting was held as a means of bringing members together for fun and fellowship, and to conduct ongoing business of the CAA.

In 1993, the Colorado Auctioneers Association hosted another convention of the National Auctioneers Association in Denver, Colorado.

The Colorado Auctioneers Association has grown steadily since 1957. At the present time, the Colorado Auctioneers Association has over 150 active members.
